Yellow River hit by climate change

Beijing, China — Scientists say a catalogue of environmental damage linked to climate change is pushing the Yellow River source region into an ecological breakdown, in a new survey commissioned by Greenpeace.

The study, written by the Lanzhou-based, Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, describes a chain reaction of environmental impacts driven by global warming and threatening the source of the Yellow River.
The scientists draw on the latest research into various environmental changes on the Tibetan Plateau to assess the impact of climate change on the region. Melting glaciers and permafrost, shrinking lakes, deteriorating grassland and desertification are all identified. Triggered by rising temperatures, the effects are wreaking havoc on the Yellow River source region.
