marine life

The Aquatic Beauty of Hong Kong Photography Submission

Hi,

Although I'm new here, there's a book project they may be interesting. I've copied the text of the flyer below. (Yes, I am currently interning with Project Kaisei, so if I sound like I'm advertising, I apologize.)

Hong Kong Marine Life Carnival 2009

Hong Kong Marine Life Carnival 2009 香港海洋生態嘉年華 2009

Hong Kong harbours an astonishingly high marine biodiversity. We have about one tenth of some 800 stony coral species in the world, and we have over 300 recorded reef fish species inhabiting our coral and rocky reefs. The on-going reef fish survey conducted by Eco-education & Resources Centre (ERC) has recorded nearly 200 species within Port Shelter alone. Despite this, our demand for seafood has affected local marine fishery resources.

In order to increase public understanding on reef fish diversity in Hong Kong and raise public awareness to sustainable use of marine resources, the Eco-education & Resources Centre is organizing the Hong Kong Marine Life Carnival 2009. The event includes guided exhibition board tour, guided snorkeling, booth games organized by various institutes and conservation groups, beach cleaning, origami day and mini concert. We wish to provide participants with a relaxing and interactive way to learn more about marine life and conservation in Hong Kong. Details of the event are as follows:

Date: 27 – 28 Jun, 4 – 5 Jul, 11 – 12 Jul 18 – 19 Jul (Sat and Sun); Time: 1100 – 1800; Venue: Sai Kung Pier (near the public swimming pool)

Living Seas group on Facebook

If you're interested in marine conservation and - like many people here - you have a Facebook profile, check out the new Living Seas group. HK Outdoors contributor Charlie Frew is among the founders. [blimey - already gone, see next post; lasted even less time than a big garoupa at Hoi Ha...] Still, keeping this post as next bit still ok Rather appropriate cartoon in today's SCM Post:

Here's press release from WWF HK; following is a link to page where you can support WWF's position, and the comment I made when adding my support for a new, conservation department:

WWF Hong Kong is taking full page advertisements in Hong Kong’s newspapers, asking the Government and the AFCD to explain why they have failed to provide responsible stewardship of Hong Kong’s fish resources.

This is the first time in its history that the local arm of one of the world’s leading conservation bodies has taken such action.

“The questions highlight the serious failure of the AFCD to fulfill its declared role of promoting the sustainable use of fisheries resources. This failure amounts to a dereliction of duty,” said the Chairman of WWF Hong Kong, Mr. Markus Shaw.

HK fish need help

The following is an email from Dr. Andy Cornish, which shows how you can support planned measures that could greatly help Hong Kong's severely depleted fish stocks.

HK diving

Hong Kong is surrounded by sea. The approximate sea surface area is 1650 sq km, and dotted with some 200 islands. The rocky reefs and coral comunities of Hong Kong shelter a diverse and exquisite range of fish and marine fauna. Over 300 species of reef fish and 84 species of corals (hard & soft) have so far been recorded.
