Newsletter 1 Nov 2006

Hi:

I hope you enjoyed Halloween. I had a scary evening, researching and writing info on health impacts of air pollution, especially particulates. Started a new thread on the Hong Kong Outdoors forum: Airborne particulates in Hong Kong - health risks. Could help Donald Tsang, as he seems unsure whether particulates cause a health risk, or chiefly a cosmetic problem, reducing visibility and making skies greyer - which I've mentioned in thread Hong Kong suffers Chronic Air Pollution.

Also done an article, On smoggy days, can we clean the air indoors? - after online research, seemed using HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter could be worthwhile, albeit might not remove (many of) the very smallest particles. Several models available here, including in Fortress.

For all the smog lately, Hong Kong remains a beautiful place. A new tour, launched by HK Tourism Board, covers some top places in the northeast New Territories - in Tolo Harbour, and Double Haven - and seems good value at initial price of HK$150 (tho aimed at overseas visitors). I've been with family and friends; posted photos and some info in Northeast New Territories Island Hopping Tour.

Also new is an article on Accommodation in rural Hong Kong hotels, hostels, guest houses - though it's by no means complete.

Perhaps these and other articles will help you enjoy the wilder side of Hong Kong as cooler weather at last arrives.

Though if you plan to ride the Lantau Skyrail, maybe best to avoid today, with Typhoon Cimaron approaching - we're watching progress, following it in the forum.

All the best,
