We worry (rightly) about the shocking air pollution in Hong Kong today, but people have been critical of poor air quality for centuries.

In 1661, John Evelyn wrote (about London, but it could apply to Hong Kong today):

"Her Inhabitants breathe nothing but an impure and thick Mist, accompanied with a fuliginous and filthy vapour … corrupting the Lungs, and disordering the entire habit of their bodies, so that Catharrs, Phthisicks, Coughs and Consumptions rage more in this one City than in the whole Earth besides."

(Don’t forget to sign the Greenpeace petition for HK Government to measure air quality by international standards, not their own dumbed-down ones.)
